Blog Moved

17 Jan 2011 8:00 Tags: None

The bog has moved! Huzzah! We have a new shiny page layout, proper footnote support, a commenting system which might be more usable, and I'm no longer held back by the evils of blogger. Of course, I still need to actually build this website. Been meaning to do that for a few months, but it keeps getting away from me...

DeadlineCon 3

This week is going to be a fun week. Between a 2000 word history essay that I'm yet to pick a title for (FridayThursday), a group project report and presentation for which the base content is not complete (Friday) and the fact I have a job with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering here at Imperial College, work for which I need to get done before I leave in order to do the upcoming term (Friday).

All Your Coursework Are Belong To...Who? Part II

Missed Part I? Read it here

Well, a month later and Imperial College Registry still haven't replied to my email, excepting the automated receipt of my question. But, as pointed out by a fellow student as Imperial, I didn't do enough digging of the information already available to me. The Intellectual Property Policy for Students at Imperial falls under the Research Support section of the website which, in retrospect, makes a lot of sense: most of the intellectual property will be generate in research. This also

Tron: Legacy - Oddly Factual

30 Dec 2010 8:00 Tags: None

And, admittedly, the title is about as close as I'll deliberately come to an outright lie on this blog. I don't think anything in the film really made any real sense, but it was good fun.

I went and saw it in lovely polarised 3D (leaving me with a lovely polarised headache) with a...mixed group of people. Now, once we'd managed to pin down the magic digitising laser as some form of 3D scanner/printer, the other computer person in the group asked me what the ISOs were. I quickly quipped off the reply 'unhandeled seg[mentation] faults'. Of course, this is plainly ridiculous, as proper memory management would be a key part to a system like the grid. However, what they might be is uninitialised memory.

Why Blog?

27 Dec 2010 8:00 Tags: None

It's a question that occasionally I get asked. And I do like answering questions with unnecessary gusto and going on for quiet some length (often on tagents).
The really short and concise answer is Chris.

He convinced/told/muttered at me to do this shortly after he became one of Imperial's mighty bloggers (blogonauts?); I had no real idea what I was going to write about or anything much. The first few months (up to last Christmas) were posts from spur of the moment thoughts.

C++ For Physicists: 010 Dos and Don'ts (& why)

20 Dec 2010 8:00 Tags: None

These points will assume you've done some programming / have been taught how to program. The information here is mainly based of mistakes I have seen undergraduate physicists make over the last couple of years. Don't just blindly accept my word for things - if you think I've got something wrong, email me, or leave a comment. As, if you hand in some code using stuff you've read here, and your lecturer disagreed with it, do encourage them to email me - one of us will learn something new :).

More News

13 Dec 2010 8:00 Tags: None

As always, I've left writing content for this to the last minute. Well, the last few hours, but over the course of a week that's really not much of a difference. Hopefully I'll finish one of the longer, more interesting posts that are in the pipeline sometime soon (including the one which will answer the questions that Google sends here to answer.

Arbitrary Bonus News Post

9 Dec 2010 8:00 Tags: None

Unfortunately, a full bonus post to replace the one I missed a couple of Mondays ago is going to be waiting on me actually getting something akin to a good night's sleep - there's only so many days you can have 4-6 hours before you wonder when psychosis is going to set in. In the mean time, bits and bobs of news.

All Your Coursework Are Belong To...Who?

6 Dec 2010 8:00 Tags: None

I don't think that British Law will ever cease to amaze me at some level. I first stumbled across this issue two weeks ago whilst doing me research for me Digital Economy Act.

Now, it doesn't come as too much of a surprise to me that, when I submit a piece of coursework, I also submit some of my rights over it. I'm still trying to find out to exactly what extend I give away my work, but it looks like it becomes a joint ownership situation. However, it can get a lot more complicated when you think about all the other companies that might be able to get their hands into it.

Not-A-Blog-Post

29 Nov 2010 8:00 Tags: None

Whoops! The fact it was Sunday yesterday managed to elude me. Possibly related to bashing my head against coursework. Annoyingly (thankfully?), I'd forgotten to reset the "Ben failed to post a post" post, so I didn't have my blog declaring to the world how fail I am.

Actual post to follow just when I don't have coursework to do...
